Ambleside Bowling Club

Ambleside Bowling Club

In 1987 a local residents group accepted responsibility for a playing area off Ambleside Way that had previously been used as a company sports ground. High am Lane Leisure Association was formed to develop the whole site for community use. Within this was a bowling green that had been neglected and used for a number of purposes, including youngsters playing football and cricket and riding ponies.

In 1989 a number of people realised the potential of the green and decided to renovate it and the following year Ambleside Bowling Club was formed. A vast amount of work was required as the surface was in a poor condition and pitted with soft patches caused by pony hooves, all of which had to be dug out and replaced by hand. The ditches had all but disappeared and required rebuilding and hedges had to be cut back and some removed, plus removing numerous weeds from both the surroundings and the green itself. The machinery to help in the work was acquired from whatever source was available and after a while sufficient funds were raised to purchase a grass cutter. 

The club is an independent section of Higham Lane Leisure Association, who are the lessees of the ground, and all members of the Ambleside Bowling Club are registered members of the Association. There are mixed and ladies-only teams, while friendly, social and league matches  take place during the April-September season.

About Nuneaton Hockey Club
Founded in 1912, ours is one of the oldest clubs in the country – we’ve played hockey in Nuneaton for well over 100 years! We are a family orientated Club which balances our long history with a modern, forward thinking approach. 

Our motto “Pret d’accomplir” or “Ready to Achieve”, sums up the positive spirit of our teams. We are passionate about hockey in all its forms and have 3 mens teams, 3 ladies teams and an active juniors section.

Hockey runs all year round with league activity October – March and Summer Hockey May – September.

About Our Netball Club
Our home ground is split between Ambleside Sports Club and Pingles Leisure Centre. We currently have five senior teams playing in the Coventry and District Netball Association League. We are affiliated to England Netball, who have awarded us “Silver” club accreditation. League matches are played on Saturdays and our kit is navy and sky blue.

We are a group of like-minded chaps who get together for a weekly game of football – not walking but three-touch. Weather-permitting, we play every Thursday, from 7.30pm for an hour, on the tennis court area at Ambleside. We then enjoy a post-session social pint. Numbers vary on availability, so it can be four, five, six or seven a side and anyone who turns up can play. Ages currently range from early-30s to mid-60s.

About Saturday Football
Our Saturday team competes in the Leicestershire County Football League. After becoming established just three seasons ago, we have enjoyed remarkable success; achieving back-to-back promotions and clinching the league title in 1922-23.

We are always on the look-out for new players as we aim to continue our progress and currently have a great mix of young and experienced lads, ranging in age from 17 to 39.

About Shortmat Bowls
We are a mixed group of men and women, aged between 30 and 80, who play shortmat bowls throughout the winter months at various clubs in Nuneaton, Hinckley and Tamworth.  As part of Nuneaton Shortmat Bowls, which has two divisions, we are currently in league 1. 

There are also singles, pairs and triples competitions throughout the season, which any individual can take part in, while the team contests cup matches.

We are open to new players of any age and although all teams are competitive there is also a friendly atmosphere during games. There is no dress code but any player who joins will be provided with a club t-shirt.
